Young People in Solitary Confinement
In NSW, children can be held in solitary confinement for days at a time, even if they haven’t been convicted of a crime.
Advocates say more children are being impacted, with an increase of nearly a hundred children being held in solitary between 2023 and 2025.
Earlier this month, the Justice and Equity Centre (JEC) was in the NSW Supreme Court representing a client who was held alone in a cell for 25 days, aged just 17.
JEC Solicitor, Petra Franks joined 2SER Breakfast tell us more about the case and what it could change.
