Wine Chat: Muscat grapes

EN: Episode originally aired on 23/10/2025

Up until the 1960s Muscats and fortified wines were the backbone of the Australian wine industry; in modern times Muscat is rarely seen on labels of wines around Australia In spite of this the Wine Australia 2025 vintage report states Muscat Gordo Blanc is Australia’s fifth most harvested white grape, and it’s uncle Muscat à Petit Grains is also in the top 10.

This week we look at the role the Muscat family of grapes play in the Australian wine industry, to discuss this we are joined by BSC: Wine Science student Cal Lee.

Wine of the Week

2025, Konpira Maru La Douche Tropicale’, Verdelho, Viognier, Granite Belt, Queensland
Cal Says: Bright fruity and fun skin contact Verdelho with a 10% addition of viogner (EN: not muscat as said on air). Acid driven and slightly grippy this wine really appreciates being out of the fridge for 20-30 minutes. Pairs beautifully salty snacks, cured meats or a pizza,  think of it as the BYO pineapple when hanging out with a judgy friend group. Drink now, don’t wait.
