Waynes 4×2 – 14th August 2025: Weapons, La Maquina and more!

Need something to watch over the weekend but not sure where to start? Want to listen to something but don’t quite know what?

Wayne Massingham is here to save you with his weekly recommendations in film, music, and television.

Film: Weapons

Zach Cregger’s (director of Barbarian) sophomore film is a psychological thriller with horror elements, following a small town in Pennsylvania that is uprooted by the sudden disappearance of seventeen third grade students. The story follows multiple people affected by the tragedy – including the father (Josh Brolin) of the only child who didn’t vanish, a troubled police officer (Aiden Ehrenreich) and the teacher of the class of missing students (Julia Garner)

Television: Rivals

Set in the 1980s, this period comedy-drama follows a noveau-rich British Nobleman (Alex Hassel) and his rivalry with a British lord and managing director of a local television station (David Tennant). This rivalry later involves a temperamental former BBC journalist (Aidan Turner) who is hired to be instrumentalised in the war between the two men. Described by many as the ‘bonkbuster’ of 2024, with a second season being announced as soon as the first season ended

Television: La Maquina (The Machine)

La Maquina is a Spanish language show that follows an aging boxer (Gael García Bernal) as he tries to get back on top of the boxing world, with the help of his manager and best friend (Diego Luna). However, a dangerous organisation rears its ugly head, and the stakes of his rematch becomes life or death. Also stars Eiza Gonzalez as the boxer’s ex-wife, a journalist who finds herself in a collision with the boxing world

Album: I Love People — Corey Hanson

Corey Hanson’s fourth album is a departure from his band Wand’s work. Compared to the heavy psychadelic rock records, I Love People focuses on the softer, singer-songwriter aspect of Hanson’s career. With piano and strings as the focus, the album is similar to that of 70s singer-songwriters.
