Wayne’s 4X2 – 11 September 2025: Sorry Baby, Big Thief and More!

Need some entertainment but don’t know where to start? Paralysed by the options on your streaming services? Luckily for you, Wayne Massingham is here to save you with his weekly recommendations in film, music, and television.

Film: Sorry Baby

Sorry, Baby is the debut film from actress Eva Victor, who wrote, directed, and starred in this movie. She plays the protagonist, Agnes, a literature professor in a small liberal arts college in New England. She is visited by her friend Lydie, played by the exception Naomi Ackie, and as they reconnect she feels that they are talking around a past issue. We are then transported back to their college days to find out what it is they are deliberately avoiding. This film is beautifully written and directed, and explores themes of recovery, resilience, and inertia.

Television: The White Lotus

Season 3 of The White Lotus dropped earlier this year in February, and if you haven’t watched it yet, this is your sign! This season is set in Thailand and starts with the iconic mysterious death of a character we now have to solve for. There are three predominant groups: a North Californian family of two parents and three young adult children displaying toxic power dynamics; an odd couple of a young woman and an older man where things aren’t adding up; and a group of three female friends where on the surface it seems that their friendship is impenetrable, but cracks lay underneath. Filled with another star-studded cast of Jason Isaacs, Aimee Lou Wood, Sam Rockwell, Walton Goggins, and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

The White Lotus Season 3 is available on HBO MAX.

Televsion: A Gentleman in Moscow

A Gentleman in Moscow is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Amor Towles. This is a historically fictitious show, set in 1921 Moscow in the midst of Russia’s communist takeover. We follow aristocrat Count Rostov who’s political adversity to the current rule results his banishment to a luxury hotel’s attic. He lives there for 30 years, watching history go by as Lenin dies and Stalin comes into power. Ewan McGregor takes the leading role in this fascinating look at history.

A Gentleman in Moscow is available on Paramount+.

Album: Double Infinity – Big Thief

Big Thief is back with another phenomenal album, Double Infinity! This is album six for the recently turned three-piece band, with Max Oleartchik leaving the band last year for undisclosed reasons. From this upheaval, they did a bit of soul searching on how they would approach making an album without him, and decided to bring in a lot of musicians to feature on the record. Big Thief wrote and composed the songs, then recorded them with these guests who added improvisations and their own perspectives, and these live recordings ended up as the finalised tracks on the album. Filled with the typical sounds of Big Thief: James Krivchenia’s percussive excellence, Buck Meek’s iconic guitar sequences, and Adrianne Lenker’s raw-yet-comforting lyricism.

Double Infinity is available on Bandcamp.
