Thomas Mayo – Sydney Writers Festival

Thomas Mayo is a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man, born and raised in Darwin. Not only is he the author of seven books and the assistant National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, he is also a signatory of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. In 2024, his book The Voice to Parliament Handbook won the ABIA for Book of the Year, Social Impact Book of the Year and General Non-Fiction Book of the Year.
Thomas is taking part in several events throughout the Sydney Writer’s Festival this year. He released his book ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ last year as a call to action for those who believe in reconciliation, to continue fighting to close the gap. Thomas joins us to talk about the future of reconciliation and the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
