Sydney Councils Call For Lower Speed Limits

A raft of Sydney councils are calling on the state government to give them the power to reduce speed limits, claiming the current 50 kilometres per hour default is not longer fit for purpose.

Councils argue they know their local roads better than the state government and that lower speed limits in suburban areas will make roads safer. Bicycle NSW agrees, saying that lower speeds correlate with fewer accidents and deaths. However, the NRMA has warned that the proposed change could lead to confusion, frustration and more fines for drivers.

The Daily spoke with NRMA’s Peter Khoury and NSW Bicycle CEO Peter McLean to hear their contrasting views over the proposal.
