Murujuga at Risk: Culture vs. Gas

Murujuga, also known as the Burrup Peninsula, is home to one of the world’s oldest and most extraordinary collections of rock art, with over a million petroglyphs dating back more than 50,000 years. But this sacred cultural landscape is now under serious threat from the expansion of Australia’s largest gas project: the North West Shelf.
As industrial activity intensifies and emissions rise, Traditional Owners, archaeologists, and environmental advocates are raising urgent concerns.
Joining the show is Benjamin Smith, Professor of Archaeology (World Rock Art), School of Social Sciences at the University of Western Australia, to help us examine the cultural, environmental, and political stakes.
Can Australia protect Murujuga’s irreplaceable heritage while continuing to pursue fossil fuel development?
