Migrants, Television and Australian Stories

When TV was introduced to Australia in the late-1950s, it came alongside the post-war migration boom. And both tv and migration have been inextricably linked to one another ever since, and in some surprising ways.

New research has done a deep dive into just how Australia’s migrants have shaped Australian tv, as well as how their stories are being represented, and the challenges faced in authenticity. The joint effort between Melbourne University, Monash, University of Wollongong and UNSW, is now available to read about in a book called Migrants, Television and Australian Stories.

The Wednesday Daily’s EP Cody caught up with two of the researchers, Professor Kate Darian-Smith from the University of Melbourne and Dr Sukhmani Khorana from UNSW, to discuss their fascinating work.
