If you found yourself hearing more music playing and more mentions of obscure European nations over this weekend, you may have been hearing about Eurovision. The 69th annual European music competition took place in Switzerland last week, where 37 countries, including Australia, battled it out to find a winner. 

In the end, Austria won a dramatic victory, but the event did not lack controversy and excitement. Jess Carniel is Australia’s Preeminent expert on Eurovision. She’s an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Queensland and has been Australia’s trusted voice on all things Eurovision for years now.
