A Deep Dive Into Midwest Emo

In the 1990s, angsty teens were gifted a smorgasbord of exciting new music genres that they could listen to and indulge their melancholy.

Grunge and shoegaze both predominated, but neither was quite as melodramatically sad as Midwest emo.

Fusing the angsty lyricism of emo with the arpeggiated guitar and mellow pace of indie rock, the genre quickly gained traction outside its birthplace in the American Midwest.
