Do We Really Need School Uniforms?

As with most Australian schools, catholic, independent or public, some form of uniform code or policy is usually enforced. Recently a school in Victoria has made news regarding two Sudanese girls being banned from wearing their hair in cornrows – a hairstyle tied in culturally with the student’s ethnicities.

Each state in Australia has anti-discriminatory law preventing a school to interfere with cultural diversity and appearance relating to a uniform. But this poses bigger questions on the school uniform – is it preventing a student’s self expression or diversity? And does it really affect a student’s academic performance? Today The Daily was joined by Senior Lecturer and registered Psychologist, Dr. Amanda Mergler to discuss this further.
