‘Fly Girl’: a turbulent production by Ensemble Theatre

Fly Girl has hit the Ensemble Theatre. It’s a turbulent story of Australia’s first female commercial airline pilot.

In the late 70’s, the airline industry was heavily male-dominated. This did not fly with 23-year-old flight instructor Deborah Lawrie, who aspired to become Australia’s first female commercial pilot. However, she encountered repeated rejections from Reg Ansett, who claimed that women were “unfit” to fly large planes because of their menstrual cycles.

Lawrie endured a remarkable struggle for over 18 months, but ultimately became the first person to win a case under the Sex Discrimination Act.

This landmark victory not only changed her life but also paved the way for future generations of Australian women in the workforce, marking a significant moment in the history of feminism.

Don’t miss the chance to fall in love with Deborah Lawrie’s inspiring story! The production runs at the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli until November 22nd and features a cast of five actors portraying over forty characters.
