Today sees the long-awaited debut album from Ella Haber! Through Blood, Like Kin sees the Eora/Sydney-based jazz and soul vocalist shine with a collection of deep and reflective jazz and sou infused with memory and catharsis. String orchestration interplays between delicate guitars, hip-hugging rhythms and lush horns, Haber depicts a coming-of-age story. The record was created over five years with producer Yianni Adams and a powerhouse ensemble of Australian instrumentalists. A must-have for the discerning soul collector Haber chose not to release the album on any major streaming services, aiming to encourage alternatives for music consumption that prioritise artist value and intentional listening.
Kevin Purdy is a veteran multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer with a vast music catalogue dating back to the late 70s. His musical journey has led him to create his own individual musical style, compiling his past into a colourful new world of sound. This is his eighth solo record and is a genre-bending trip that combines bright, carnival-like rock and ska with experimental collage of sounds and samples. While hinting back to his earlier work, Hundreds & Thousands is also something fresh from Purdy, full of fun rhythms and eccentric songwriting. Out now on Soft Records.
Youth Group are a much-loved Sydney-based indie rock group who formed in Sydney’s inner-west in the mid-90s and are now approaching three decades together. Big Whoop is their sixth studio album (their first since 2019) with current members, Toby Martin (vocalist), Cameron Emerson-Elliott, Danny Allen, Patrick Matthews & Paul Murph. Big Whoop is a wide-ranging album of jangly Australiana and synthesised dance-rock tracks that are imbued with poetic and incisive lyrics about memory and suburban life, both past and present. Self-described as “A bit of a mixtape”, musically they drew inspiration on this record from 80s/90s “Madchester” groups such as Happy Monday’s and Stone Roses as well as Pixies and Go-Betweens.
