Antibalas, which means Bulletproof in Spanish, are a NYC-based afrobeat orchestra focusing on rhythm and horn heavy instrumental tracks inspired by 70s Ghanaian Highlife, Nigerian Afrobeat as well as Cuban and South American sounds. Antibalas formed in Brooklyn in 1998 and are a 12-piece ensemble, credited with introducing Afrobeat to a wider global audience. Hourglass is their tenth studio album and sees the outfit returning to its instrumental roots. On Hourglass, co-counder of Antibalas Martin Perna chose to shift away from the direct, politically conscious lyrics of their recent work and instead speak through melody and rhythm, seeing it as a more effective way to convey the emotions in the album as well as making those emotions more universally accessible.

СОЮЗ are a Belarussian creative collective from Minsk who are now based in Warsaw, Poland since 2022. The project was founded by multi-instrumentalists Alex Chumak and Mikita Arlou and later joined by Polish musicians Albert Karch and Igor Wiśniewski. Their sound is a spaced out combination of global folk and soul with Eastern European influences and their latest album is evidence of this. Krok, which translates as “step” in Belarusian, was recorded in Sao Paulo, direct-to-tape, using a crack team of Brazilian session musicians including Sessa, Biel Basile, and Marcelo Cabral. It is a deeper and more melancholic release than their previous works, blending the bands’ Eastern European roots with jazz, folk and global influences into a work laced with hope, dreams and a celebration of life.

Moving to the UK now, Da Lata are a London-based production duo made up of DJ’s Chris Franck and Patrick Forge who blend their diverse influences and musical personalities into songs that speak of struggle, survival, and ultimately hope. With their latest record, Edge of the Blue, Da Lata have honed on a sound that they describe as “North London Tropicalia” and released here a gem of world influences, particularly vintage Bossa Nova, Jazz and Afrobeat combined with hip hop and dance music. Since their inception over two decades ago, Edge of the Blue is their most accomplished work to date and was released to commemorate 25 years of them making music together.
