Kanana by Bumpy

The Feature Album this week on 2SER comes from Naarm soul powerhouse Bumpy, with her debut solo record Kanana!

A longtime fixture in the Australian soul and jazz scenes as regular collaborator and frontwoman of acclaimed cosmic disco outfit Squid Nebula, her debut LP dives through gorgeous deep and textured RnB. The title translates in Noongar language as “Land where the sun sets”, and the record itself is themed on the inherent shared beauty of a sunset as a universally shared time for all people to reflect in both stillness and awe.

Production wise, this is also  masterclass in studio recording that is frequently also a family affair as Bumpy  assembled an all-star cast of friends and collaborators throughout including the “Bumpy Choir”, which features a who’s who of Australian soul artists including, among many others, Emma Donovan, Emma Volard, Nitida (of Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me) plus siblings Emmy Yarram, Ben Yarram and Daniel Dowd. It’s as uplifting and honest an album as they come, beautifully produced and the true standout of Australian soul music this year.
