The revolutionary Yellow House Afghanistan screens this Sunday

Yellow House Afghanistan is screening this weekend at The Sydney Underground Film Festival

The film documents a home for local artists in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Opening in 2011, the Yellow House has enabled and inspired the local people of Jalalabad to create a myriad of art. For example, the first female-led Afghan film and the first Pashto punk song.

The Yellow House was founded by George Gittoes and Hellen Rose, who also directed “Yellow House Afghanistan”. Gittoes and Rose are both highly aware of the political misconceptions in Afghanistan. They hold a level view of who is to blame for Afghanistan’s instability and who the locals may resent.  Many of the individuals in the documentary are anti-American, and some are even part of the Taliban. From these perspectives, we glean a fresh view of Afghanistan and their politics.

Yellow House is a revealing and heart-warming look at how art can help in war-torn areas. It is screening at The Sydney Underground Film Festival this Sunday, 14 September at 1:30 pm. Dendy Newtown will host the screening, and tickets are available on the Dendy website. In addition to the screening, there will be a live Q&A with Hellen Rose and George Gittoes for all your burning questions.

Yellow House Afghanistan is also available on SBS on demand.

The Daily producer, Amy Hosking, spoke to Hellen Rose and George Gittoes about the documentary.
