Wine Chat: Tasting Etiquette

Going to a wine tasting can be intimidating; there’s lots of pomp and ceremony, people sucking and spitting wine all over the place, and a bloke with no socks telling you that the flavour of mulberries is unique to the NE facing slopes of a single vineyard. This week, as always, we’re joined by BSC: Wine Science student Cal Lee to cut through the pretension and get down to the realities of what actually matters in a group wine tasting environment.
Wine of the Week
2023, Bink Wines ‘Crossroads’ Chardonnay, Barossa Valley, S.A.
Barossa Chardonnay is usually looked down upon for its over ripeness the heavy influence of oak and MLF. Yet Koen “Koko” Janssens takes the lessons learned from making Natty wine in the Adelaide hills to make a synthesis of the riper Barossa style with the lean and linear chardonnays of the Adelaide Hills. The result is a wine at a crossroads, medium weight, with a pretty acidity lifting up the richer ripper body of the wine. Drinking great now but will happily cellar for another 10 years.
