Upcoming Lecture Delving into Creative Approaches to History

On Wednesday, the University of Sydney is hosting an important discussion on creative history. The 2025 Wood Memorial History Lecture, titled “Creative Histories: a conversation”, will explore history’s varied perspectives and methodologies.
Dr. Sophie Loy-Wilson will sit down with three scholars across disciplines to discuss how we consider history. The academics include Shauna Bostock, a researcher of Indigenous Australian studies; André Dao, a postdoctoral fellow and writer; and Katerina Teaiwa, a Professor of Pacific Studies. They will discuss their past and future projects and how they challenge conventional approaches to history.
Creative histories are produced through personal experiences and diverse methodologies. This approach helps us see beyond our usual scope, often clouded by one-dimensional perspectives in academia – an area historically reserved for upper-class, white men. In turn, the 2025 Wood Memorial Lecture will utilise creative history to provide new ways of approaching, practising, and presenting history in Australia.
The 2025 Wood Memorial Lecture, “Creative Histories: A Conversation”, is taking place this Wednesday, 27 August, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Registration is available on the Sydney University website or Humanitix. This is an online and in-person event.
Monday Daily Producer, Amy Hosking, spoke to Dr. Sophie Loy-Wilson, a historian from the University of Sydney, about what to expect from The 2025 Wood Memorial Lecture, “Creative Histories: A Conversation”.
