ARIA’s Overhaul to Better Support Ausmusicians

Top 100 music charts used to be a global arbiter for tracking new releases. However, streaming has forced artists to compete with the most popular songs of the last century. Now the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), the country’s foremost chart trackers, are trying to change that with a new demarcation in their chart revamp.

Since digital streaming has been included in the ARIA Charts, new artists have had to compete with songs like ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac and ‘Mr. Brightside’ by the Killers, making it harder for new artists. ARIA’s planned overhaul of their charts will separate songs older than 2 years into their own ‘legacy charts’. The plan is to support emerging artists better with this new layout.

Dr. Ben Green, Lecturer in Music, Industry and Popular Culture at RMIT University, joined Tuesday Drive to chat about this planned change and what it may mean for artists.
