Discriminatory Patterns in Police Bail Checks of Aboriginal Children

Everyone should be treated the same by police and the law.

But a new expert report, analysing how often NSW Police check on young people at their homes while they’re on bail, shows that’s not the case.

The data shows police are more likely to check Aboriginal young people than other young people – and more than twice as likely to subject Aboriginal young people to ‘very frequent’ checks.

The Justice and Equity Centre commissioned this report for a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, where they are representing two Aboriginal brothers who say they were targeted by police for more frequent checks, because of their race.

Kate Sinclair, Dharug woman and Solicitor at the JEC joined 2SER Breakfast to discuss.
