This week sees the welcome return of that new-time rock and roll in the form of Pop Filter’s fifth studio record. Made up of members of The Ocean Party Curtis Wakeling, Jordan Thompson, Lachlan Denton, Liam “Snowy” Halliwell, Mark Rogers &, Nick Kearton. Pop Filter are now spread across the east coast, coalescing when time allows at Lachlan Denton’s furniture workshop to record. Trade Place Tape is imbued with friendship, memory and their trademark combination of off-kilter indie-rock and , with witty and laconic songwriting and rich acoustic guitar melodies. This was twelve months in the making and is a real gem of poignant, leftfield Australiana. Out now on their own Osborne Again label.
Let’s move across the world and dimensions to New Orleans and lend our ears to the sounds of solo artist Greg Rodrigue, aka Unsubscriber. Self-described as a “…conduit for an internal dialog about mental health turned into a love song of acceptance for anxiety and depersonalization”, this is a strange yet beautiful collection of low fidelity sonic experimentation combining post-punk, electronics and tv recordings. Unsubscriber is out today on Community Records. Great stuff from the home of The Pelicans.
Dividing her time between Massachusetts and New York, Casey Deniel is a singer, producer and songwriter that doesn’t put out records lightly (this being her first in eight years). Enlisting the talents of a host of friends including Adam Schatz (Japanese Breakfast), bassist Spencer Zahn, and guitarists Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) and Carly Bond (Meernaa), My Heart is an Outlaw is a complete work of alternative/indie rock that explores explores themes of freedom, queerness, memory, and” radical presence”. Beautifully recorded, this will be right up the alley of fans of The Weather Station and Japanese Breakfast and it out today on Jealous Butcher Records.
