Now would be a good time is the hotly anticipated debut record from Folk Bitch Trio, the musical Bermuda Triangle comprising Gracie Sinclair, Heide Peverelle & Jeanie Pilkington. Landing today via JAGJAGUWAR, it’s an incredible distillation of their style of idiosyncratic, minimalist folk and Americana, replete with dark and ironic lyrics that can be both confessional, angsty or humourous. As they revealed recently on 2SER’s The Band Next Door, they are a group who see themselves as both a part of, and apart from, the conventional folk music scene. They will be playing a pair of shows in September at The Lansdowne as part of an extensive tour that will also take them to Canada and the USA later in the year.

Also bringing highly regarded new directions in folk and country are Meanjin-based duo Minor Gold. Dan Parsons and Tracy McNeil garnered wide attention with their 2023 self-titled debut, and Way to the Sun is a continuation of their melodically rich and lyrically deep take on the classic sound of country and Americana. The album was recorded in California at Ultimate Hair Farm by Dan Horne (who works with Cass McCombs), with a big emphassi placed on warmth and clarity in the production, particularly on keys and guitar. It’s a real beauty and out now independently.

Worry Mall are an Eora/Sydney six-piece made up of members from various bands including Babitha, Bower, Dappled Cities, Little Lovers and Disgusting People, and they’ve just released their debut EP. Dad’s Dead is an EP in the truest sense – they’ve crammed this  onto a 7-inch record – and it’s a wonderful combination of sunny d.i.y guitar pop with sweet sax flourishes. Pick up the vinyl via discerning local dealers or via their bandcamp, play it for your best friends.

As always, we try to always post listening links to sites that let you support artists directly (through purchasing music and merch) rather than multinational streaming sites. We do keep a playlist on one such site

… but hold that while convenient, is not a sustainable model for fairly compensating artists.
