It’s raining, it’s pouring, new music we’re exploring. Fresh off the press this week is the latest from veteran London-based musician, dj and producer Adrian Sherwood. An understatement: Sherwood is hugely influential in the UK bass music scene, particularly for his work through the 1980s and 90s collaborating with UK and Jamaican artists such as Lee Scratch Perry, Prince Far-I, Cold Cut and Sinead O’Connor, along with being a member of Tackhead. Released on ON-U Sound, the now-legendary record label that Sherwood founded in the late 1970s as an outlet for his own and friends’ productions, The End of Everything is beautifully spaced out, bass-heavy dub-reggae interspersed with live key and horn instrumentation and an emphasis on deep rhythms. It’s a trip all the way and worth taking an extended dive through.

LA-based Hunx and his Punx have just returned with their first album in twelve years. Walk Out On This World is a super fun garage rock record inspired by 60s teen pop and 80s punk that would live happily on your record shelf alonside the B-52s and Bikini Kill. The three-piece feature Seth Bogard, Erin Emslie and Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams and have been recording together since the early 2000’s and it’s great to hear them back together for the first time since 2019. This is out now on Get Better Records and also keep an ear out for Hunx and also the Punx appearing on 2SER very soon in person.

The prolific work of Naarm-based producer, Dj and multi-instrumentalist Hudson Whitlock seems limitless, as a member of Surprise Chef, Mo’Ju, The Pro-Teens, The Cactus Channel, Karate Boogaloo and many more. Out today on College of Knowledge, Bath Time, the latest record under his solo project Brenda is an under-the-radar, heavy hitting slab of soul, funk and cinematic jazz. While the music is solo work by Whitlock, he pulled in a full slate of friends from aforementioned groups for the recording. Lead single Take a Hint was a firm favourite across the 2ser soul shows, and the full LP arrives with trademark crisp analogue recording and buttery lowdown romantic vibes, it’s highly recommended for fans of the like of Bobby Oroza.

Also kee an ear out for some incredible news singles on the 2SER airwaves, including Holiday Row by Hoolahan, a Sydney-based d.i.y group founded by childhoold friends Tim Kevin and David Orszaczky and specialising in literate pop songwriting. Originally demo’d as a fun tribute to Lindsay Buckingham’s perennial Griswold Familyfavourite  Holiday Road, Holiday Row morphed into a “a mirage for trouble to run to – a vicarious world that’s all beauty and nostalgia… without connection.” Hoolahan will be launching this tomorrow night (Saturday August 23) at Mixtape Brewing in Marrickville with a special ring-in horn section of members of Mosaic, along with supports Knievel, Victoria. It’s free and doors are from 7pm if you want to take a ride on the inner west kick.

As always, we try to always post listening links to sites that let you support artists directly (through purchasing music and merch) rather than multinational streaming sites.
