Double Magic, the fourth studio album from Sunbeam Sound Machine (aka multi-instrumentalist Nick Sowersby) just dropped via Remote Control. It’s a record that covers various aspects of modern life, both the meta and personal: love, loss, a journey into parenthood, social media feeds, the housing market  and the healing nature of time. All this is delivered through the medium of deep-grooving, synth laced disco and warm analogue production.
Further afield, Californian-Spanish duo Mondo Lava (James Ketchum and Leon Hu. Sometimes Gareth Ewing) have just released their latest on the Hausu Mountain label. The album title, Utero Dei, translates as “Womb of God”. That may give a hint of what is in store here. If not, the band’s descpription of the record as a “phantasm pilgrimage” is a great summary. Coming in at over 80s minutes, it’s a warped, acid-drenched experimental fusion album that is influenced by the kaleidoscopic alternative strangeness of 70s brazilian tropicalia, cumbia and psych-rock – all funnelled through a smorgasbord of modern effects and intentional jarring weirdness.

Local Eora/Sydney power-poppers Sachet are back this week as well, releasing their first music since much-loved “The Seeing Machine” EP. A dispatch on dealing with disinformation, The Source is filled with surprising and dynamic twists and ripping guitar hooks. This is the first drop of a six-track cassette (Taipai Learner) which they’ll be releasing later in the year through the excellent Tenth Court label.
