16 Years of Subsonic- Running an Independently Owned Music Festival in Today’s Market
As the Australian Arts scene continues to battle economical, regulatory and cultural struggles, Subsonic continues to thrive on resilience and authenticity.
Starting in 2009 Subsonic has navigated a wide range of setbacks including bushfires, lockdowns, floods, tightening regulations and rising costs, but 16 years later has remained a 100% truly independent, NSW-owned festival.
Monday Drive’s Anthea Tselios spoke with Subsonic Music Festival director and founder Scott Commens about what it takes to run the festival, how they’ve handled regulatory hurdles, and why staying connected to underground music culture and supporting local grassroots events remains essential.
Spanning over three days (Dec 5th-7th), the festival is a celebration of underground music, arts and community, nestled within the heritage-listed Riverwood Downs Mountain Valley Resort on Worimi Country.
